Rev. Nicole Abdnour reflects on what Cedarkirk means to her…
If I close my eyes and create a mental picture of the view from the upper porch of Cedar Lodge looking down towards the river, I can inhale and smell the scent of homemade rolls mixing in with the wonderful scent of the outdoors. I can hear the dinner bell ringing along with the sounds of laughter and stories as people are drawn into the lodge.
Sometimes when I see this picture I am six years old surrounded by family — nuclear and church — gathered for a weekend family camp. Other times I’m an elementary school camper excited about spending a week away from my brothers with my best friend from home and the new friends we make from our village, or I’m in high school enjoying the challenges and responsibilities of participating in the SHL (Senior High Leadership) program. Still other times, I’m a youth ministry intern charged with leading a Presbytery retreat for middle school students. Or I’m a pastor preparing to lead worship for the summer campers.
The care and love I received through Cedarkirk’s ministries as a child modeled God’s love and care for creation, for community, and for me. The physical and spiritual environment not only provided me with the space and support to explore my Christian faith as a child and adolescent, but as an adult, it continues to remind me who and whose I am. Cedarkirk is part of the foundation of the Christian community that raised and nurtured me, and I am blessed it has been a constant in my life. I give thanks to God for those who have supported its ministries over the years by offering prayers, financial gifts, and time; I pray fervently that this legacy will continue to grow and provide transformative faith experiences for all who gather for generations to come.
