Labor Day Litany

L. Let us pray to the Lord of all creation, from whom comes life and work and purpose.

Almighty God, when You formed us lovingly out of the dust of the earth, You breathed into us the breath of life and gave us work and purpose for living.

P: For providing varieties of work and for blessing us by our labor: We give You thanks, O Lord.

L: For those who work in agriculture, who work outside in heat and cold, who plant, and tend, and harvest, for farmers and farm workers, and those who work on rivers and seas, who fish, and net and haul, for all who provide and prepare the food we eat:

P. We give You thanks, O Lord. Protect them, and bless their work for Your purposes and the world’s welfare.

L: For those who tend the sick and those who seek new cures; for doctors and nurses, for scientists and technicians; for caregivers, and chaplains, and those who support the work of healing, who bring the ministry of compassion:

P. We give You thanks, O Lord. Sustain them, and bless their work for Your purposes and the world’s welfare.

L: For those who inspire our minds, nurture joy, and point us toward beauty. For artists and musicians; for those who write books and those who teach us to read them. For teachers and scholars, and entertainers and inventors, for those who guide children and care for the aged, for all who are a means of your grace:

P. We give you thanks, O Lord. Renew them, and bless their work for Your purposes and our welfare.

L. For those who work in business and manufacturing, who manage finances or harness technology, for those who work in offices and those who work in warehouses; for those who market products and for those who move them, for those who create jobs, and facilitate trade and industry,

P. We give you thanks, O Lord, for blessing us with commerce and productivity. Guide them in their work, for Your purposes, and the welfare of Your people.

L: For those who govern and administer. For those who protect and serve. For those who seek justice, insure peace, deal with conflict, rescue the faltering. For those whose work is dangerous, or stressful, for those who carry great responsibility:

P. We give you thanks, O Lord. Strengthen them, and bless their work for Your purposes and our welfare.

L. For those whose labor is building and constructing. For those who create and design, who repair and maintain, for those who clean, and manage buildings and yards, concrete and landscapes, for those who create homes and schools and stores,

P. We give you thanks O Lord, when we are blessed with shelter. Give those who work energy and bless their work for Your purposes and everyone’s welfare.

L: We pray for those who seek work Lord. Especially now We pray for those who need jobs, for the unemployed. And we pray for those whose work place is harsh or humiliating, cruel or oppressive.

P. O Lord, help them. May work be a blessing, and not a source of suffering.

L. Keep us from laboring only for greed.

P: Make us loving and responsible in all that we do.

ALL. Creator Lord, You are the source of all power, purpose, and wisdom. Your Spirit gives us our calling. Guide our work. Give all people work that enhances human dignity and bonds us to one another. Give us pride in our work, a fair return for our labor, and joy when our work is an expression of loving You and loving our neighbor. For we pray in the name of Jesus Christ, whose vocation was serving You, and who was faithful in his calling, Amen
