Romans 6:1-4

What then are we to say? Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life.

I remember overhearing a conversation in high school between two girls very active in one of the Christian after school groups. The conversation entailed participating in some very un-Christian behavior. One of the girls expressed hesitancy and even said something to the effect of, “I don’t know, isn’t this what we were talking about in bible study last night? I’m not certain we should.” To which the other girl replied, “Weren’t you listening? We just have to ask for forgiveness afterwards and we are forgiven. It’s like a get out of jail free-card!”

The act of confession and God’s grace are not get out of jail free cards which allow the possessors the opportunity to commit sin. That’s called cheap grace. God’s grace calls us to newness of life, the shedding of old ways that we may be free to live the life to which Christ calls us.

Gracious and loving God, thank you for the new life you offer us through Jesus the Christ. Through the gift of your Holy Spirit enable us to walk in the newness of life offered to us through him, turning away from sin and towards you. Amen.
