Romans 3: 23-24

“since all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God; they are now justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus,”

I said once to my college chaplain about a classmate I admired that his achievements intimidated me. He responded “He puts his pants on one leg at a time.” There are some things in life that make us realize quickly how much we are like others. We all need air to breath. We all need to eat. We all need to rest.

One of the truths the Christian faith leads us to is the awareness that before God we all are sinners and we all stand in need of forgiveness. The holiness of God is so great that we all fall short of deserving God’s love. Indeed what’s common to us is the reality that, regardless of our individual failures or achievements, we stand in need of God’s forgiveness. And we all are equally in need of God’s gift of the life and work Jesus to reconcile us to God and redeem us.

This is a source of our community, and our place in the family of God, Christ’s life is for each of us. Regardless of our country of origin.

“Generous God, help us to be secure in your community given to us by the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.”

-Rev John DeBevoise
